Natural Hair Treatments: Cheap and Easy Hair Care Straight from Your Kitchen

A lot of us find going to the salon on a regular basis essential to our well-being. And why not? It always feels luxurious to have someone else take care of our needs, and most of the time we leave the salon with beautiful-looking hair.
Unfortunately, hair treatments at a salon can be expensive, and going to the salon frequently is not something that all of us can afford to do. Thankfully, there are natural hair treatments for common hair problems that we can easily concoct using materials straight from our own kitchen. Here are some of them.
For Dull and Lifeless Hair
Sometimes, hair can look dull and lifeless because of product buildup. The hair care products that we use often leave residues that do not come off our hair strands even after shampooing. A clarifying rinse often helps remove this product buildup and restore life and shine to our hair.
To create a clarifying rinse, you can mix half a cup of apple cider vinegar with a cup of cold water. Apply this solution to your hair right after shampooing, and then rinse it off thoroughly with cold water.
For Dry Hair
If your hair feels dry and rough to the touch, you can restore its moisture by massaging mashed avocado onto your scalp after shampooing your hair. Leave the avocado on your hair for about half an hour before rinsing it off thoroughly.
An alternative to avocado is jojoba oil. Mix a teaspoon of jojoba oil with two teaspoons of sunflower oil and then heat the mixture up to a point that is tolerable to you. Test the mixture against your skin first to see if the heat will not burn you. Massage the oil to your scalp and then cover your head with a warm towel. Leave it on for half an hour then rinse thoroughly.
For Oily Hair
If excess oil is a problem for your hair, you can treat it by applying mashed watermelon or cucumber onto your scalp and hair after shampooing. Massage it thoroughly and then let it alone for half an hour. Rinse with cold water afterwards.
An alternative to mashed watermelon or cucumber is warm beer. Wash your hair with beer and then rinse it with cold water. Shampoo your hair afterwards to get rid of the beer smell.
For Dandruff
Dandruff makes the scalp dry and flaky, and it can be quite itchy. A good remedy for this is mixing a teaspoon of ginger juice extracted from pressing ginger root with a teaspoon of lemon juice and a teaspoon of sesame oil. Massage the mixture on your scalp and leave it on for about five minutes. Afterwards, shampoo your hair.
For Graying Hair
You do not have to rely on hair dyes just to prevent your gray hairs from showing. You can easily keep the gray hairs hidden by boiling half a cup of sage and 1/4 cup rosemary in a pint of water. Let this herbal tea steep for a couple of hours, strain it, and then add four teaspoons of rum. Apply this tea to your gray hairs with a cotton ball and then shampoo. Repeat this weekly until you see the gray hairs disappear, and then apply it monthly to keep the gray hairs hidden.

Babies are small, delicate and fragile creatures. They need to be loved, cared for and protected from any possible harm that can befall them. That is why most parents can be very picky with the products that they buy for their babies, particularly food items and baby care items such as baby shampoo. Many of these parents opt to buy natural baby shampoo for their little ones as much as possible.
Natural baby shampoo is the only kind of shampoo that you should use on your baby. At this point in your baby’s life, her skin is still soft and delicate and her body’s immune system is not yet fully developed. Any toxins coming from commercial baby shampoo, even those labeled as “natural,” can be harmful to your baby and lead to conditions that may affect her for life.
What a lot of consumers do not know is that even the baby shampoos labeled as “natural” that we can buy from the grocery store or drug store may not be as natural as they ought to be. They can contain harmful chemicals like phthalates and sodium laureth sulfate that can impair your baby’s development. These “natural” baby shampoos can also irritate your baby’s skin and eyes.

Milk Shampoo
Mix half a cup of whole dry milk with a tablespoon of cornstarch and a drop of your desired essential oil. Add the entire mixture in your baby’s bath and stir until it dissolves. Make sure that you consult your pediatrician first before you use any essential oil on your baby.
Herbal Baby Shampoo
Boil your choice of herbs in a cup of water. Good herbs to use in a baby shampoo are chamomile, lavender and aloe vera, but ask your pediatrician first if you can use them on your baby. Upon boiling, steep the tea for 20 minutes and then strain the solid parts from the liquid. Put the tea in a plastic bottle and combine with a cup of liquid castile soap. Shake the bottle so the ingredients will mix together.
If you do not have fresh herbs, you can add three teaspoons of your desired essential oil to an entire bottle of liquid castile soap if the soap is plain. Again, remember to ask your pediatrician first before you use essential oils on your baby.
Our babies are fragile creatures that need our care and protection. We need to use only the gentlest natural baby shampoo on them. But more often than not, the natural baby shampoos we see on a grocery shelf are not really natural. The only way we can be sure is to read labels thoroughly or make our own natural baby shampoo.

The problem here is that in pills and tablets, the chemicals extracted from these naturally occurring substances are heavily synthesized. These synthesized chemicals can have side effects when taken as a cure. Besides, if you can get these chemicals in their purest form straight from the source, which is what you do when you use natural home remedies, why should you rely on something that has been heavily altered and shaped into a pill?
Another benefit to natural home remedies is that the ingredients that you need are usually right there in your kitchen. If not, you can easily buy them at a grocery store and in some cases a craft store. More often than not, you will find that these ingredients for natural home remedies are a lot cheaper than keeping bottles of pills in your medicine cabinet.
Here are just a few examples of natural home remedies.
- If you have a headache, you can try drinking hot green tea with lemon instead of popping paracetamol. Drinking lukewarm water also helps.
- If you cannot sleep, drinking a glass of milk with a dash of honey is a better sedative than sleeping pills.
- If you have skin problems, a few drops of lavender oil or tea tree oil in your bath water can help you deal with these skin problems.
Do Your Research First
One important thing that you need to do before you substitute your pills and tablets for natural home remedies is to do your research first. You can get information on these remedies from Google, or you can read books on common home remedies.
You may also need to consult with your doctor first if you intend to use certain herbs and essential oils in your natural home remedies. This is especially important if you have existing health conditions. Some herbs and essential oils may be too strong for you to use. Your doctor will be able to tell you the correct dosage for you as well as substitutes if you cannot use a specific herb.
Nature is the best healer. When we use natural home remedies rather than synthetic pills or tablets, we go straight to the source and submit ourselves to the healing power of nature. It makes more sense to do this than just popping a pill.
